The patriarch of a family is often considered to be the alpha dog, capable of handling themselves in any given situation. They’re the badasses in the family. We lean upon them for guidance, support, and blunt honesty that sometimes can be the last thing we want to hear. Such characteristics sometimes force us to take our fathers for granted. We lose sight that they need our love as much as we need theirs, and no matter how stern or sullen they may seem, it’s often because they care about us so damn much.
For those who are fortunate enough to have a nurturing Dad, we’ve compiled a top ten list of songs for Father’s Day. It’s our way of saying, “Dad, I love you,” or “Dad, I’m in Jail,” or well, you get the point.
Daddy Sang Bass – [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Johnny Cash[/lastfm]
One of Johnny Cash’s beauties. ”The Man in Black” sings of rejoining his mother and father in the heavens, where they’ll sit in a circle and play some tunes together. Weren’t expecting some Johnny in this post were you? He’s too old for your taste? Well this is a post for our elder fathers, so we’re gonna get a little old school from time to time.
I remember when I was a lad
Times were hard and things were bad
But there’s a silver linin’ behind every cloud
Just poor people that’s all we were
Tryin’ to make a livin’ out of blackland earth
But we’d get together in a family circle singin’ loud
Daddy sang bass, Mama sang tenor
Me and little brother would join right in there
Singin’ seems to help a troubled soul
