The 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees — Yes or No

The Rock and Roll of Fame suffers from the ‘everybody has to win’ mindset. Just as every kid who has ever worn soccer cleats wins a trophy, every band that’s ever hit the charts is ready for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Shouldn’t any Hall of Fame contain the elite, the very best?

I guess you can’t throw a party unless you invite someone. I’ll start taking the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame more seriously when they start giving out the awards at, you guessed it, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And just to anticipate the obvious, I’m perfectly willing to start the “I don’t really like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rush[/lastfm] very much, but even dumbasses like me think they should probably be in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” Facebook page. Let the angry posts begin.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Red Hot Chili Peppers[/lastfm]. Yes. Ten albums with many flashes of brilliance. Great live shows. This should not even be a debate.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Guns N’ Roses[/lastfm]. No. One of the most overrated bands in history. One blockbuster album and a bunch of excuses. Now if there were a Rock and Roll Tabloid Hall of Fame, they get my vote.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Joan Jett and the Blackhearts[/lastfm]. No. Two good albums whose best known tracks were covers. I have always liked Joan and her work with The Runaways was ground-breaking, but she doesn’t get the nod. This might be one for the veterans’ committee down the road.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Beastie Boys[/lastfm]. No. “Fight For Your Right” still brings a smile to my face, but that’s not enough. Yes, they are credited for being the first successful white hip hop act to convince disenfranchised suburban white kids that they can dress up like Ali G. So, you know, thanks for that.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Heart[/lastfm]. Yes. The last time I went home to throw on a Heart album was never, but they dominated the 70’s.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Freddie King[/lastfm]. Yes. Major influence on British rock guitarists who would go on to make the millions Freddie never did. His versions of well-known blues standards are among my favorites.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Laura Nyro[/lastfm]. No. This is tough because she wrote some songs that became huge smashes for other people, but some of those other people included Three Dog Night. She also “retired” at 24. By that standard Tony Conigliaro would be in Cooperstown. An excellent doomed singer-songwriter? Yes. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Nah.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rufus with Chaka Khan[/lastfm]. No. 1976 was an unforgettable year for them. Ask Mark Fidrych how that one great year worked out for him.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Donna Summer[/lastfm]. No. I’d love to love you, baby; but you don’t belong in the Hall.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Faces[/lastfm]/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Small Faces[/lastfm]. Yes. Nothing but British invasion bias, I’ll admit it. And Rod the Mod belongs for the stuff he did before he became a cartoon. My Hall of Fame will always have room for Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, and Small Faces vocalist Steve Marriott.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Spinners[/lastfm]. Yes. Slicker than I like my soul, but major influence on the Philly sound. They also boasted a long storied career.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Donovan[/lastfm]. Yes. How hippie was Donovan? He actually wrote a song called “Epistle to Dippy.” Huge hits in the 60’s. “Hurdy Gurdy Man” still rocks.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Cure[/lastfm]. Yes. End of discussion.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Eric B. & Rakim[/lastfm]. Yes. Not my field of expertise, but if you include any rap or hip-hop, you need to include them.

Next Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominee

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]War[/lastfm]. Yes. Critically and commercially beloved. Few artists brought so much funk to the top of the charts.

Little known fact. I was the first non-Cleveland D.J. to broadcast from the radio studios of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. We did a live broadcast the Friday morning before the grand opening. I’ve been dining out on that one for years.
