This year’s field of Alternative Music GRAMMY Nominees is host to a wide range musical styles. From [mp3com-artist]My Morning Jacket[/mp3com-artist]’s hard hitting riffs to[mp3com-artist] Bon Iver[/mp3com-artist]’s ethereal melodies, this year’s nominees have a bit of everything. Check out who we’re picking as our top bets to win Album of the Year, plus grab a free download of[mp3com-artist] Bon Iver[/mp3com-artist]’s single “Calgary”!
The nominees for the Alternative Music category are always among the most interesting selections for the GRAMMYs, because by definition “Alt” music is generally the kind of stuff that’s antithetical to winning major awards. By giving the genre its own category the Grammys are recognizing the growing popularity (and market share) of music that is considered outside of standard genre boundaries.
Without further ado, this year’s nominees for Alternative Album of the Year are:
Bon Iver - [mp3com-artist]Bon Iver[/mp3com-artist]
Codes And Keys – [mp3com-artist]Death Cab For Cutie[/mp3com-artist]
Torches - [mp3com-artist]Foster The People[/mp3com-artist]
Circuital - [mp3com-artist]My Morning Jacket[/mp3com-artist]
The King Of Limbs -[mp3com-artist]Radiohead[/mp3com-artist]
This years nominees are a particularly strong field. Heavyweights like[mp3com-artist]Radiohead[/mp3com-artist], [mp3com-artist]Death Cab For Cutie[/mp3com-artist] and [mp3com-artist]My Morning Jacket[/mp3com-artist] all turned out stellar albums in 2011, [mp3com-artist]Foster the People[/mp3com-artist] had one of the biggest singles of the year with their smash summertime hit “Pumped Up Kicks,” and [mp3com-artist]Bon Iver[/mp3com-artist] has established himself as one of the most exciting new artists around with two critically acclaimed albums to his own name, plus his high profile work on Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
It’s a tough call to make but we’re going to go with Bon Iver. Topping many people’s end of year lists, it is a truly special album that represents huge growth for the artist stylistically and technically. Having blown up just a few years ago with his surprise hit of a debut album For Emma, Forever Ago, Bon Iver is about as unlikely of an Grammy candidate as they come, but I guess that’s the point of the Alternative Music category!
