The long wait is over, as the world finally gets a truly new song from Soundgarden for the first time in 15 years…but it won’t be on their new album, slated for release later in 2012. The new track is called “Live To Rise” and it will be on the Avengers soundtrack (alternately titled Avengers Assemble in the UK), which hits stores on May 1st.

When interviewed on Wednesday about the song, frontman Chris Cornell explains that “Live To Rise” is not only a new song, but it’s even newer than the songs we’ll be hearing on the band’s new album.

“We’ve been working on a new album for a while… We’re pretty much done with that. We’re at the mixing stage of it and then this idea came up that we’d contribute a song for the Avengers film and so it’s actually the newest song that we have… let’s take a song we’ve been working on for the album… but none of them were really right, which happens sometimes, so we thought, let’s do another one.”

The song is so new, in fact, that it’s even new to Cornell himself. “This was written so recently and recorded recently, like last week… I barely remember it it happened so fast.”

“Live To Rise” will be the first track on the new Avengers soundtrack, joining a few other alternative artists and a lot of hard rock bands. Here’s the full tracklisting:
