British folk rockers Mumford & Sons have released new details about their sophomore album, Babel, which is due out September 25. The announcement comes after weeks of speculation from fans as to the record’s title that began when the band unveiled a cryptic teaser video on their website last month.

“We are more than excited to release Babel into the world,” the band said in a statement. “We had started writing new songs well before we got into the studio to record. At first, we peeled ourselves off the road quite reluctantly. We love playing live, obviously, but it had also become an important part of our creative process, we had been writing and rehearsing in soundchecks, and sort of ‘road-testing’ new songs on our very gracious audiences.”

“But then we fell in love with recording again. The album started to come together, and with the help of Markus Dravs once more (and engineer Robin Baynton), we started to relish the challenge of making this album. As a band, we’ve never been closer or more collaborative, all working to our strengths. And so we feel that this record is a natural progression that we’re proud of, and we cannot wait to take it out on the road.”

Bassist Ted Dwayne explained to Rolling Stone that the sound of the album will not be a complete departure from their debut, Sigh No More.

“The ingredients are very much the same: the four core instruments and a lack of a drummer, which can give it that strange, simple, unique sort of sound,” said Dwayne in the interview. “I don’t think we were looking to be too crazy and experimental.”

Producer Markus Dravs added, “The idea was always ‘If it ain’t broke, why fix it?'”

Dwayne said that the band’s hectic tour schedule over recent years took a toll on their personal lives, but added inspiration to the album. “Being away so much for the last couple of years is inevitably a theme on the record, because it’s something that we’ve all shared.”

The band will continue to take on the road this year, hitting the U.S. in August. Their tour will include the Gentlemen of the Road series, which are day-long stopover festivals that embrace local flair in four cities across the country.

Babel will be available for pre-order on the Mumford & Sons website on July 23.
