Lana Del Rey recently made headlines by performing a cover of Nirvana’s 1993 grunge nugget “Heart-Shaped Box” at a concert in Australia. But when Kurt Cobain’s widow Courtney Love caught wind of the comely “Video Games” crooner’s take on the tune, she took the opportunity to explain exactly what the number is really all about (not to mention claim a songwriting credit).
“You do know the song is about my Vagina right? Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back umm,” Love tweeted to Del Rey, although the posts have since been deleted from the social networking site (but not before Stereogum captured screen-grabs of the tweets). “On top of which some of the lyrics about my vagina I contributed. So umm next time you sing it, think about my vagina will you?”
Only time will tell if Love’s graphic description will put Del Rey off covering the Nirvana song at future shows. In the meantime, check out Del Rey’s live version of “Heart-Shaped Box” from Australia and make your own judgments.
During her Australian tour, Lana Del Rey revealed plans for a re-release of her debut album, Born to Die, with 7 additional brand new songs. The “Paradise Edition” is scheduled for a November release.
