Gotye Shows Everyone Who’s Boss – Creates New Song From YouTube Covers
Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know” is a pop-culture phenomenon. In the year since the song debuted on his Making Mirrors album, Gotye has rocketed to stardom, sold millions singles worldwide, and watched as his track has taken on a life of its own. But the Australian musician hasn’t hidden his mixed emotions over the song’s overwhelming success. With the world having adopted his song, sometimes paying tribute, sometimes butchering it, the time had come for Gotye to reclaim ownership.
What better way to show who’s boss than to take the dozens of YouTube covers and combine them to make an entirely new song. The end result is a nearly 6-minute, skilfully edited video; an often beautiful and sometimes funny new take on year’s most popular song. Gotye calls the digital mash-up “Somebodies, A YouTube Orchestra.”
Gotye explains the impetus for the project on his YouTube page saying, “Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of Somebody That I Used To Know seemingly taking over their own area of the internet, I couldn’t resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered.”
“All audio and video in Somebodies is from the YouTube user videos featured, each of them a cover or parody of ‘Somebody That I Used To Know.’ No extra sounds were added to the mix, but I used some EQ, filtering, pitch-shifting and time-stretching to make the music. ”
”I avoided using any existing remixes of the song, or any covers from tv talent shows. As comprehensive and extensive as I tried to be with my downloading of source videos, I know there are many clips that I missed.”
While Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” continues to grow, the musician pushes ahead with new singles from his Making Mirrors album. Known for his love of quality remixes, Gotye recently called attention to “Eyes Wide Open,” which received Yeasayer’s dreamy remix treatment.
