Years from now, it will be impossible to talk about the music of 2012 without mentioning Gotye and his seemingly ubiquitous hit song, “Somebody That You Used to Know.” Spending eight weeks at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and generating as many parodies as Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” the only other song to spend eight weeks atop the same chart this year.
“I’ve been a lot busier than I ever thought I could be — and I already felt like I was super busy for a number of years,” Gotye said to the Montreal Gazette about his sudden success after years of making music. “At times, it’s been overwhelming, but the real relationships in my life are the things that matter. They haven’t been affected — well, I hope, not too much. Maybe I should ask my family and friends.”
Gotye’s hectic schedule continues to motor forward, with the Australian-based artist set to appear on the Live on Letterman webcast series on Monday, September 24, at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT. The show will be streamed live from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City on CBS.com and Vevo, the performance being a precursor to Gotye’s appearance on Late Show with David Letterman that same evening.
Following the Letterman performance, Gotye’s current world tour in support of his most recent album Making Mirrors has him set to perform a series of shows in the New York area before swinging through southern states like Texas and Louisiana, followed by European dates in France, Germany and the UK before year’s end.
