Fans of ’90s grunge heroes Soundgarden will surely agree with “Been Away Too Long,” the incendiary new single from the band’s first album in over 16 years, King Animal, due for release on November 13.
The song is much more in line with classic Soundgarden material than “Live to Rise,” the band’s contribution to the Avengers soundtrack. Opening with a heavy twin-guitar attack and Cornell’s legendary howl, “Been Away Too Long” is awash in Soundgarden trademarks: shifting time signatures, dueling riffs and a propulsive rhythm powered by drummer Matt Cameron (who also mans the drums for fellow Seattle rock legends Pearl Jam).
Speaking of Pearl Jam, a juicy rumor swirling around rock industry insiders is that Soundgarden will join Edder Vedder and the gang for a massive joint tour in 2013. While it sounds like an incredible combination that would surely pack arenas around the world, one can only hope that Cameron would get double-time pay for having to play drums for both bands, especially in light of Pearl Jam’s notoriously marathon-length live sets.
