Deadmau5 On Being Treated As A Celebrity: “You Know, I’m Not Curing Cancer”
“It’s good to be appreciated,” says Joel Zimmerman in an interview with Fuse. “You know, it’s not the worst feeling in the world to go somewhere and have unmitigated access to whatever you want.”
Deadmau5 is arguably one of the most recognizable stars of electronic dance music. Signed in 2012 to an exclusive contract with the XS nightclub and Encore Beach Club in the Wynn Las Vegas, the DJ/producer’s stardom shot up faster than this summer’s gasoline prices. His price tag for playing events has also sky-rocketed. Add to that, his first radio-friendly song featuring My Chemical Romance‘s Gerard Way. The two combined forces for the most expensive EDM video to date.
The popularity of the genre, his much talked about net worth, combined with the covered of his new girlfriend and celebrity tattoo artist, Kat Von D, has bumped the Canadian music producer way up the celebrity status scale.
“Having people be extra nice around you. That never is really a bad thing,” continues Deadmau5.” But sometimes you do have these thoughts where you’re like, ‘Wow is all this really necessary? You know, I’m not curing cancer. A lot of it seems silly and unwarranted. But the more you’re subjected to it, the more you kinda feel like you have to play along.”
