Disasters such as Sandy affect the number of people able to donate blood, but hospitals still need blood to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients and children with blood disorders.

The American Red Cross urges those who are able to schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets by visiting Redcrossblood.org or calling (800) RED-CROSS.
