Turns out that Metallica must have been pleased with its first annual Orion Festival in Atlantic City, New Jersey last June because the Bay Area metal band has just announced a date and city for 2013. The now-traveling festival is scheduled to hit Detroit, MI June 8-9, with venue yet to be announced.
In addition to Metallica serving as headliners, the festival will feature a wide array of genres, from metal to country. Examples of musical diversity could be seen in Atlantic City with country artists including Eric Church, blues rocking Gary Clark Jr., alternative’s Cage The Elephant, the indie scene’s Best Coast, New Jersey punkers Gaslight Anthem as well as metal legends Sepultura.
In addition to musical acts, festival-goers will enjoy a car and motorcycle show as well as art exhibits, Kirk Hammett’s Horror Crypt, skate ramps and more. Highlights from Atlantic City weekend can be seen in two videos and a photo gallery.
According to frontman James Hetfield, the band has played many festivals over the years and wanted to improve upon the experiences they’ve seen in the past.
“We’ve been thinking about this for a while,” Hetfield said in a press conference. “We’ve been doing festivals for thirty years, and we know what we like and don’t like. We’ve seen what other people have tried to do, and we wanted to do it better. It just seems that most of the time, you’re either doing one style of music, or it’s all kind of crazy different styles. We wanted to get something in the middle.”
