Metallica has teamed up with iconic skate-wear company Vans to create a new line of shoes, with each of the band’s four members – Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo – providing their own twist on a classic design.
Each shoe will be commemorated with a video pairing the Metallica member with a rider from the Vans team. The first shoe comes from bassist Robert Trujillo, who is paired with skater Tony Trujillo (no relation) and his wife Ashley.
Tony and Ashley Trujillo are both musicians (he plays guitar, she’s a drummer) who play in their own band, Bad S—t.
The video depicts the Metallica bassist in a hard-rocking jam session with the couple, highlighted by Ashley Trujillo’s impressive drumming skills. The clip is interspersed with shots of Robert Trujillo skating around town with local kids as well as explaining how his Escuela shoe design (based on Aztec calendar artwork by his wife) came to be.
“It was obvious that maybe Tony and I should connect on a skating level, whatever that means, but also on a musical level,” Robert Trujillo said in the clip. “He is a musician, he plays bass, I play bass, he plays guitar, and it’s an honor to be able to jam with him and have fun.”
The other three Metallica x Vans clips roll out weekly over the month of February: Kirk Hammett and Nathan Fletcher (Feb. 8), James Hetfield and Steve Caballero (Feb. 15) and Lars Ulrich with Pat Moore (Feb. 22).
March will also see the release of two commemorative shoes for Kill ‘Em All, to mark the 30th anniversary since the release of Metallica’s legendary debut album in 1983.
