It has been almost eight years since the release of the last System of Down album, Hypnotize, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart upon its late 2005 release.

The band went on hiatus in May of 2006, with lead singer Serj Tankian going on to release solo material while guitarist Daron Malakian launched a new band, Scars on Broadway. They reunited for live shows around the world in 2011, though none of those shows were on American oil. The band’s legion of diehard fans, particularly those stateside, have been wondering when to expect movement – and new music – from the hard-rockers.

During an exclusive interview with L.A. radio station KROQ, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan promised that the band will indeed reconvene to record music. Just don’t ask him when it’s going to happen.

“We are going to make a new album at a certain point, it’s just a matter of when the four of us decide it’s the right time to make it,” Dolmayan said. “We don’t want anyone to go in there and do it because the rest of us want to do it. We all want to do it because it’s the right thing to do for everybody.”
