Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Talks ‘Super Collider,’ ‘Dimebag’ Darrell And, Yes, Politics

To many metal fans, a band that featured both Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine and the late ‘Dimebag’ Darrell Abbott of Pantera would have been a dream pairing. And it almost happened.

In our news interview (below), Mustaine explained that he invited Darrell to join Megadeth, but Darrell said that he was a package deal with his older brother, Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul (Vincent Paul Abbott). Megadeth had just hired a different drummer (Nick Menza), so Darrell had to decline the offer.

“It would have been pretty monstrous,” Mustaine admitted.

Mustaine, though, remained friends with the brothers. This summer, for instance, Vinnie Paul’s current band Hellyeah will be on the bill of the 2013 edition of Megadeth’s traveling heavy metal festival Gigantour. This year’s tour also includes Newsted (the band of former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted), Device, Death Division, and  Zakk Wylde’s Black Label Society. (Wylde joked with about the lineup: “It’s like a high school reunion gone wrong!”)
