We last caught up with John Gourley and bassist Zachary Carothers between Coachella sets where they revealed that playing during daylight hours is radically different than familiar late night club appearances with fog machines and moody lighting. Gourley and Carothers also explained how they ended up working with one of today’s most sought-after producers; Danger Mouse.
“We just got a call. We were actually in the studio, and he just wanted to meet up,” said Gourley. “It was like an interview situation. I felt like I was walking into an interview. We both decided that we didn’t want to make a record together. So after that, we just listened to music, hung out, and when we left, just decided that we did want to make a record together.
“He brings ‘no’ to the table,” Gourley continued. “I think it’s cool. I like that challenge of someone saying, ‘that’s not good enough. I think you can do better.’ It’s not just ‘no.’ It’s ‘no’ for a reason.”
Evil Friends is available now on Atlantic Records.
