As the frontwoman of the Niki Barr Band (and also as a solo artist), Barr has become a well-known name in the local music community, with several releases and a lot of shows under her belt (including performances at HFStival 2003 at RFK Stadium and HFStival 2006 at Merriweather Post Pavilion). Meanwhile, she and bandmate Scott Ensign found themselves writing a lot of music that just didn’t fit the hard rock sound of the Niki Barr Band…but nonetheless, they kept writing together, knowing that they would someday have a place and a purpose.
The Last Year is something new and different, and a project in which Barr and Ensign can allow those songs (and many new ones) to flourish. They describe the band as an eclectic mix of alternative rock and new wave, and they’re eagerly exploring things they’ve never embraced in past projects…electronic sounds, new technologies, and songs that don’t have to obey rules or expectations.
Having recuited musicians for their live shows who share the feeling of wanting to expand beyond the rock they’ve performed in past projects, The Last Year is ready to be seen and heard, and your first chance to do so is this Friday night at The Ottobar, as they support Baltimore synthpop band The Perfects, who eagerly describe The Last Year as “flat out amazing…think Shiny Toy Guns meets Nine Inch Nails“. (Tickets for the show are on sale now, and they’re cheap.)
Check out The Last Year’s new single “Sugar” below, and get to know the band on their website, on Facebook, and on Twitter…and if you’ve got a local band you’d like us to feature on the HFS Locals Only Spotlight one of these weeknights at 8 PM, here’s how to get your stuff to us.
