Royalty That Actually Matters, Music That Is…

It seems like the world has officially lost it’s mind in the British royal baby news. 24 hour news coverage on a baby (it’s official. it’s a boy – if you care) that will someday be King of England and could be worth billions of dollars.

As Americans, many of us don’t quite get the royal obsession but it did get us thinking about other things out there that are ‘royal.’

There’s a doughnut shop not far away was called Royal Donuts and Burgers and everyone knows that Budweiser is the King of Beers. Both of those seem to have more pertinence to our lives than a ceremonial royalty across the pond.

Here’s a list of ‘royal’ music that tops any royal offspring:

Queen

Didn’t need to pick a track for this classic rock band because there are so many… maybe Wayne and Garth said/sung it best.

King Crimson

You may not be so familiar with this pioneer of 70’s prog metal and they may not be your cup of tea (couldn’t resist) but they’ve been playing rock since 1968. The band had a resurgence in the early 2000s when they hit the road with self-professed KC fans – Tool. It’s always good to side with Tool’s lead singer Maynard James Keenan.

Sex Pistols “God Save The Queen”

Off of 1977’s Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols, “God Save The Queen” caused a big uproar across the pond but also solidified the Sex Pistols as punk rock icons.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

Long before becoming one of the biggest names on the silver screen Will Smith gave us the gem “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” The seriously 80s video is worth at least two royal babies.

Kings Of Leon “Supersoaker”

It’s been a wild ride for KOL over the last few years with their rise to fame and then tour cancellation due to Caleb Followill “suffering from vocal issues and exhaustion.” Putting the past behind them, last week (July 17) the band released their first single since 2010. “Supersoaker,” the first single from their upcoming album, Mechanical Bull (due out September 24).

Beastie Boys “Paul Revere”

This one makes the list because it include the line …

The King Adrock that is my name
And I know the fly spot where they got the champagne.

Lorde “Royals”

Lorde (born Ella Yelich-O’Conner) breakout song “Royals,” has been one of the most talked about tracks recently. The single from 16-year-old New Zealand native is a downtempo hit worth checking out.

Prince

The purple one has made a career of getting notice even when he didn’t have a name (musch like the new nameless royal). His hits span decades and allowed for a favorite Millhouse moment on The Simpsons and few truly amazingly bad movies.

Queens of the Stone Age

Queens of the Stone Age came back in 2013 with their first album in six years, … Like Clockwork. The album’s first hard-hitting single, titled “My God Is The Sun,” has been a staple on radio since it debut and their album is showing up on many top album list for 2013.

Franz Ferdinand “Right Action”

The Scots are back with the brand new track “Right Moves.” Fans can catch a full set from the band now online thanks to the folks at Live on Letterman. Their upcoming album, Right Thoughts, Right Action, is due in late August.

Elvis & Michael Jackson

Can’t ever talk about royalty without the two Kings … whatever you feel about them. Still more interesting. Elvis used to shoot out TV instead of changing them and loved deep fried peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwiches. MJ … ah where do we start or stop on that one.

Honorable Mentions

King Missile – “Detachable Penis”
30 Seconds To Mars – “Kings and Queens”
King – “Love & Pride”

Guilty ‘Royal’ Pleasure

It has absolutely nothing to do with music but is still just a classic Royal moment. Take a look at this archival footage of Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer George Brett loose his mind after getting called out for “excessive pine tar.” He goes nuts at about the 2:40 mark in the video from a 1983 game versus the Yankees.
