Tonight’s HFS Locals Only Spotlight revisits Baltimore’s Sun Club and their “dirty sunshine circus pop”. We’ve featured the band and this song on the Spotlight before, but since we’ve chosen them to open the first edition of our HFS Cheap Date series of free shows, we figured they were very deserving of a proper write-up.
Having already been childhood buddies, they formed the band in 2012, put together a couple of intriguing DIY releases, and eventually caught the attention of noted Baltimore producer Steve Wright of Wrightway Studios, who helped them craft their latest EP, entitled Dad Claps At The Mom Prom. The record is stocked with a half dozen bright, sunny, reverby, anthemic tracks that encourage stomps and “whoa-oh-oh” sing-a-longs.
Most of the band’s influences come from the local bands they’re big fans of, and the list reads like a who’s who of Baltimore indie rock: Dan Deacon, Animal Collective, Beach House, Wye Oak, Future Islands, Double Dagger, Weekends, Celebration…the list goes on and on.
Having just released the new EP last month, they’ll be spending much of this winter and spring on the road, including their first ever dates on the West Coast and some valuable exposure at South By Southwest in Austin next month. By the time they’re back in town to open our inaugural HFS Cheap Date show at Rams Head Live on May 11th with Bad Suns and Skaters, they will have been well worn-in, but judging from how much they’re loving what they’re doing, not the least bit worn-out.
Keep up with the band on their Facebook page…and if you’ve got a local band you’d like us to feature on the HFS Locals Only Spotlight one of these weeknights at 8 PM, here’s how to get your stuff to us.
