Wolfmother, the Australian riff-rock band who hit it big with “The Joker and the Thief” in 2005, surprised the world when they dropped their new album, New Crown, late Saturday night (Mar 22). The album serves as the follow-up to their 2009 release, Cosmic Egg. The Australian rock band self-released New Crown and immediately made it available for purchase for a cool $7 on Bandcamp.
Oddly, frontman Andrew Stockdale made it public last year that he’d no longer be releasing music as Wolfmother. He proceeded to release a solo project titled Keep Moving, then with little more than a month’s passing, he reversed his decision and returned to the Wolfmother moniker. Stockdale then held a short run of small headline shows in Australia last November, playing songs that would become New Crown.
Recorded over the past year at The Shed in New South Wales and Mates Rehearsal Studios in L.A., the album is full of fiery Led Zeppelin-inspired crunchy riffs, the band’s signature ’70s psychedelic rock and an occasional detour into punk on songs like “Feelings” and “She Got It.”
Unfortunately for U.S. fans, the band has not announced many dates stateside, but the band will play some festivals in May. Get their tour dates below:
