In 2012, Beck pulled the very Beck-ian move of releasing his newest batch of songs, Song Reader, via a book of sheet music, as opposed to putting out actual recordings of the songs, which has been the norm for a century or so.

The official Song Reader website, which solicited fan-performed versions of the songs, said “Only you can bring Beck Hansen’s Song Reader to life.”

But “you” is a very open term, and now a lot of rather big names — including Beck himself — will be recording their takes of the songs for an audio version of Song Reader.
