Turns out, Will Ferrell is the real leprechaun.

Last night (March 17), Ferrell took the stage at the Late Show to treat fans to a special St. Patrick’s Day performance of “Danny Boy.” And oh, did he nail it.

Dressed all in green like leprechauns often do, Ferrell gave a bittersweet performance of the old Irish ballad.

But this was no joke, not at all, Ferrell instead was there in a sort of mourning, telling host David Letterman he wasn’t so much celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, but taking in the serious moment.

See, St. Pat’s is a serious holiday for Ferrell because as we drink our green beer, lest we forget, it’s all about the real Saint Patrick leading the snakes out of Ireland.

“Every year I put on my outfit and I walk the streets of New York educating people on the dangers of snakes,” he explained, which may be kind of true, since he did previously appear on Conan O’Brien’s late night show in New York years back also dressed as a leprechaun. One who had lost his pants.
