As two of Rush’s biggest fans, it makes sense that Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins would show up on the band’s new box set celebrating the 40th anniversary of their album 2112.
The project includes five discs stacked full of material. Not only does the box set come with a reissue of the original album remastered at Abbey Road Studios, but it will contain rare and live recordings, as well as five newly recorded covers. Grohl and Hawkins contributed their take on “2112 Overture,” and now fans can hear that version for the first time. Grohl, Hawkins and Raskulinecz performed the song when they presented Rush at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
The Strumbo Show premiered the song, which was recorded by GRAMMY-award winning producer Nick Raskulinecz. Grohl and Hawkin’s cover feels a tad slower than the original, but the guitar has a heavier vibe in keeping with the Foo Fighters’ sound. You can stream it here by toggling ahead to the 46:00 mark.
The 40th anniversary boxset of 2112 will be available December 16th.
