Fresh off his television series Atlanta, Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino confirmed a new album late yesterday (November 9th). Awaken, My Love! will reportedly drop December 2nd, and the first single “Me And Your Mama” is now available to hear.
Rumors about a new album began earlier this week when a photo of upcoming releases posted at an F.Y.E. store began circulating. Childish Gambino’s then-unannounced album was among future titles. He confirmed yesterday by tweeting a picture of the cover art along with the album’s title.
“Me And Your Mama” is over six-minutes in length and begins with dreamy, lullaby-esque synths that continue even as a heavier beat and a warped synth interplay with that initial sound.
Those who watched Atlanta‘s first season may have already caught a glimpse of the album without even fully knowing it. In the episode “Juneteenth,” Glover’s character Earn and his daughter’s mother Van (Zazie Beetz) visit a wealthy couple holding a party to commemorate the day slavery ended. While Van chats with the host, Earn joins her husband in his office. Right on the shelf sits the forthcoming album.
Awaken, My Love! marks Childish Gambino’s first musical project in two years. He last released the mixtape STN MTN in 2014, and in 2013 released the studio album Because the Internet.
