It’s pretty clear what’s going to be on Green Day’s agenda for at least the next four years. As if the band hadn’t declared its dissatisfaction with the election of Donald Trump and his upcoming presidency loudly enough, Green Day marched on with the crusade at the 2016 American Music Awards last night (Nov. 20) by providing the show with its most explosive anti-Trump moment.
While performing the song “Bang Bang,” vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong embellished the number with the chant, “No Trump, No KKK, no fascist USA.” The line comes from the song “Born to Die” by the Texas hardcore band MDC and the original lyric is “No War, No KKK, no fascist USA.”
There were other more subtle references during the show. Sting, supermodel Chrissy Teigen, Tony winner Idina Menzel, Mark Cuban and show host Jay Pharoah all made jokes and comments, but Green Day’s performance was the most inflammatory.
