Numerous artists from across the music spectrum have joined forces for the project Stories for Ways and Means, an ambitious, multimedia “literary mixtape” that Waxploitation founder Jeff Antebi conceived ten years ago for a good cause.
The project takes many forms — an expensive coffee-table style book, 350 pages of stories, videos, visual art and narration. Bon Iver and Tom Waits will join My Morning Jacket singer Jim James, the Pixies’ Frank Black and more by contributing stories aimed at children and adults. A recently released trailer promises paranormal tales, nature writing, and other whimsical yarns by famous writers and lyricists.
The full list of contributors is quite long, but includes: Devendara Banhart, the Dead Weather’s Alison Mosshart, Kathleen Hanna, Will Oldham, Gary Numan, Del the Funky Homosapean, Laura Marling, Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz, Matthew Dear, Elliphant, Alec Empire, Sera Cahoone, Gibby Haynes and John Vanderslice.
Proceeds will benefit education-focused nonprofits Pencils of Promise, Room to Read and 826.
Narration for the short videos will be performed by Nick Offerman, Zach Galifianakis, Danny DeVito, Andre Royo, Joey Bada$$, Lauren Lapkus, Sarah Jones, Phil Lamarr, Lizzo and King Krule. The visual stories will be paired with works by 30 visual artists.
